After a week off from competition, the UCSB track and field team headed to Riverside this weekend to participate against nine other schools in the UC Riverside Spring Break Classic. Four other Big West teams were also in attendance.

The men’s team continued its undefeated reign with a win in the Spring Break Classic with a score of 117 points, improving its record to 4-0 in meets this season. The women’s team placed sixth with a score of 53.5, while Cal State Northridge took the title scoring 154.5.

Sophomores Ike Okpara and Tori Usgaard headed the decathlon and heptathlon events, respectively. Both athletes placed fifth in their competition with Okpara scoring a personal best of 6254 and Usgaard with 4773. Okpara obtained this score with new PR’s in four different events in the decathlon and Usgaard scored her best in the javelin.

The 1500m event came to be one of a kind as both runners set personal bests for themselves. On the women’s side, sophomore Maxine Goyette placed fifth with a time of 4:38.61. For the men’s side, an incredible display was put on by junior Shyan Vaziri whom placed first with a time of 3:44.62 which ranks sixth this year on the NCAA Outdoor Performance List.

Santa Barbara showed its strength and precision in the javelin event claiming spots on the podium for both teams. Sophomore Melissa Rake took first place in the women’s event with a throw of 43.97m, beating all other competitors by three meters or more. On the men’s side, the Gauchos took the second, third and fourth spots with stellar performances from freshmen Jerrick Zhang and Matthew Kuskey as well as junior Spencer Neste.

This weekend the Gauchos will head down to UC San Diego to compete in the Cal-Nevada Championships. The first events are set to start on Friday.
