A beautiful Saturday at the campus pool provided the perfect backdrop for the UCSB swim and dive team as they completed a dual sweep against UC San Diego. The women notched a 172-123 victory and the men won by a margin of 184-113.

With the sweep, the UCSB women’s swim and dive team improves its record to 5-1, and the men sit at a comfortable 2-1. Both the men and women’s swim and dive team for UC San Diego fall to 1-1 after the meet.

“It was a very good meet for us,” Head Coach Gregg Wilson said. “[It went well] from the beginning with our divers. We’ve got two women who qualified for the NCAA zone meet.”

The Gaucho divers were spectacular for both sides as freshman Mariah Renteria and sophomore Hannah Tomp qualified for the NCAA zone championships in the one-meter dive with scores of 269.35 and 266.85, respectively. Sophomore Monika Terry placed first in the women’s three-meter dive with a score of 275.95 and freshman Lester Wright placed first in both the one and three-meter dives for the men with scores of 376.70 and 365.85, respectively.

Senior Andrea Ward continued to shine in the water finishing first in each of the two individual events that she swam. Ward won the 1000-yard freestyle by a little over 26 seconds with a time of 10:04.32 and also took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.66, edging out 13-time All-American senior Anji Shakya of UC San Diego.

“I am very pleased with both [my individual performance and the team’s performance],” Ward said. “It was really fun [swimming the 1000-yard freestyle], which I haven’t swam in a while, and I am happy with the result.”

Juniors Carissa Metcalf and Katie Records also had big days for the Gaucho women, as Metcalf took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.75 with Records just one-tenth of a second behind finishing with a time of 1:03.85. Records returned the favor however, finishing first in the 200 yard-breaststroke with a time of 2:18.02, while Metcalf placed second with a time of 2:18.66.

“We’re both very talented breaststroke swimmers,” Records said. “She has a little more speed than me initially, but it is fun to train and race with her.”

Ward and Records would also come together to place first in the 200-yard medley relay with the help of sophomore Charis Hoppe and senior Allie Knight. The women finished with a time of 1:42.05.

Freestyle swimmers senior Ryan Hanni and junior Andrew Barmann stood out on the men’s side. Barmann finished first in both the 1000 and 500-yard freestyle with times of 9:27.62 and 4:33.55, respectively. Hanni flashed his speed in the short distance freestyle events finishing first in both the 50 and 100-yard swims with times of 20.88 and 45.49, respectively.

Hanni was also a part of a first-place finish in the men’s 200-yard medley relay. Along with teammates senior Randy Aakhus, sophomore Andy Castilleja and sophomore Mickey Mowry, the Gauchos were able to finish with a time of 1:32.70.

Aakhus and Mowry finished strong in individual events as well. Aakhus took first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.81 and Mowry finished first in 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:49.17. The Gauchos ended the day placing first in 21 out of the 32 events.

UCSB next competes on Saturday, Nov. 16th at the University of Redlands.
