This past weekend, Isla Vista Foot Patrol responded to a series of illegal drug possession and alcohol-related incidents.

According to I.V. Foot Patrol Lieutenant Ray Vuillemainroy, a patrol deputy stopped a vehicle for a traffic code violation and found the driver to be a UCSB student in possession of a quarter pound of marijuana and a large sum of cash.

According to Health and Safety Code 11357a, in the State of California a possession of over an ounce of marijuana is considered a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 dollar fine and six months in jail.

Vuillemainroy said that IVFP gathered evidence leading them to infer that the driver was in possession of illegal substances with intent to sell. Under Health and Safety Code 11359, the possession of marijuana with the intent to sell any amount of it is a felony.

“Further evidence indicated that the driver possessed the marijuana for sales purposes,” Vuillemainroy said. “He was arrested for the violations and transported to county jail.”

According to Vuillemainroy, further investigation revealed that other individuals on the 65 block of Del Playa Drive were involved in another narcotics possession and sales-related case.

“[This] led to sheriff’s deputies serving a search warrant on an apartment in the 6500 block of Del Playa,” Vuillemainroy said. “This search resulted in deputies recovering approximately one and a half pounds of marijuana and over one ounce of cocaine. Four additional people were arrested as a result of this investigation.”

In addition to this past weekend’s drug-related arrests, Vuillemainroy said four citations were given for minors in possession of alcohol, five citations for open containers and eight arrests were made for being drunk in public.
