A UCSB maintenance worker discovered a decomposed body in the marsh area between Santa Catalina Residence Hall and the Santa Ynez Apartments yesterday at 9:45 a.m.

The remains were discovered roughly 200 yards away from the dorm’s bike racks. The UC Police Department is working with the Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office to examine the body and determine the identity and cause of death.

According to UCPD Sergeant Rob Romero, investigators have not discovered evidence suggesting the death resulted from violence.

“We did locate some items that were of interest and we’re taking a look at that as we speak, but nothing that indicates foul play,” Romero said.

Romero said detectives will continue to investigate the incident.

“Obviously we don’t have all the answers right now and it’s going to take some time to get those answers, but it’s really important that the community knows that we don’t feel that anyone’s in danger right now and that if anything was to change we would definitely let the community know,” Romero said.
