The UCSB men’s tennis team hosts Westmont College on Saturday in a cross-town, non-Division I matchup, while the women’s tennis team will travel to Miami for its second tournament of the season.

The men are 3-2 this year and are 1-0 at home so far, while Westmont is 0-0 going into its first official match of the season.

“We’re looking forward to having them out here,” Head Coach Marty Davis said. “We had a UCSB Classic fall tournament and played good against them.”

In that preseason tournament on Nov. 11 and 12, Santa Barbara competed against Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego and won all its matches against Westmont. The Warriors’ only action since then was a scrimmage against Santa Barbara Community College yesterday, but is a program that has been on the rise in recent years.

“They’re coming off a really good season; they finished sixth in the country in the NAIA,” Davis said. “They have a new coach [Mark Basham] who’s terrific.”

UCSB is excited to have the chance to capture its fourth win of the season, something they did not do last year until March.

“We’re feeling pretty good,” sophomore Alexander Gryaznov said. “Westmont is not as tough as some of the other teams we faced. Still, if we don’t play 100 percent, we won’t win.”

Davis agreed that Saturday is a good opportunity for the team to build some confidence after playing three ranked teams so far this season.

“It’ll be a nice relief after USC,” Davis said. “On paper, it should be a chance for us to regain some confidence.”

The women’s tennis team is coming off of two consecutive losses, and will look to rebound this weekend in Miami at the ITA National Indoor Championships. The women’s squad fell 6-1 to the University of Arizona last Saturday, and fell by the same score to Arizona State on Sunday.

Freshman April Scatliffe will be one of the Gauchos to keep an eye on during the tournament. Scatliffe was able to finish last weekend’s play with two victories of her own against the Arizona squads, improving her weekend ranking from No. 5 to No. 4.

The men’s match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Center courts.
