Singles tennis moves at a completely different pace from other sports. There’s only one player to focus on and only split-second chances to capture the action. I found the returns more interesting to shoot than the serves, as they often happen much faster and involve more risks, so that’s what I focused on. In this shot, my struggle to catch each element together — the ball, the player’s movements and the emotion on her face — finally paid off. I cranked up my shutter speed, braved the harsh afternoon shadows, and was left with this as the final product.
