Sports have referees to reduce violence in sports. Every once in awhile, they do a halfway decent job. Aside from each referee’s (in)ability to call fouls consistently, the simple fact of their presence tends to reduce violence on courts and fields. However, it seems the worst violence is never seen by referees. It’s usually caught on film or video. As a sports photographer, I’ve witnessed many painful occurrences that have escaped the referees’ eyes. This is not necessarily a picture of foul, but more of a picture of someone’s neck that was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
