Gabriel Giffords, a Democratic Congresswoman from Arizona, was shot in the head from close range today while hosting a public appearance in Tucson.

According to a statement released by the White House, a number of other people have also been shot, with some reported dead and others seriously injured. Congresswoman Giffords is gravely wounded.

In the statement, President Obama asked the nation to join in support for victims of the shooting.

“We do not yet have all the answers,” Obama said. “What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society.  I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers.”
