Gauchos Welcome Northern Rivals

It’s always hardest to say goodbye. Having won two games straight, the UCSB women’s basketball team returns to the Thunderdome Saturday night to try to upend conference leader Cal Poly, as well as bid farewell to a quintet of key seniors. Guards Meagan Williams, Chris Spencer and Ariana Gnekow, along with forwards Jordan Franey and Jessie Goble will be honored before the tip-off of a game that needs to be won if the Gauchos (10-16 overall, 7-7 in Big West) are aiming for anything higher than a fifth seed in March’s Big West Tournament.

Keep Mold Spores Outdoors With Housing Advice

Do stachyobotrys, penicillium, aspergilus, paecilomyces or fusarium ring a bell? Probably (and hopefully) not, but when you see the white, black, green or gray stuff growing on your walls or bedding, you won’t doubt that you’ve got mold!

A Winning Round of Songs ****

One of the indie-folk world’s most eccentric artists has released this year’s most ambitious project to date. Joanna Newsom’s latest release, Have One on Me, is an impressive three-disc effort that allows the musician to showcase her full range of talents. For Newsom, length works as a weapon rather than a weakness, as it gives her all the time and room she needs to make the most of her ability as a singer, harpist, pianist and storyteller. A majority of the tracks play out as narratives, full of symbolism and motifs with a richness and vibrancy that would impress an author.

UCSB Takes Care of Business

Despite lacking the valuable services of junior center Mekia Valentine due to illness, the UCSB women’s basketball team still managed to bowl over Cal State Northridge 67-54 last night at the Matadome. Freshman forward Sweets Underwood went 5-5 from the floor as Valentine’s understudy while snagging 12 boards to boot, posting her first double-double sporting a Gaucho uniform. The win gives UCSB (10-16 overall, 7-7 in Big West) the regular-season sweep of CSUN (4-21, 2-11), having beaten the Matadors 69-55 previously at home.
