After opening the Stanford Invitational with a 6-5 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in 11 innings, UCSB softball dropped its remaining three games against BYU, Santa Clara and Stanford by a combined score of 18-2.

Senior Lindsey Correa went the distance against CSUB, allowing four earned runs on six hits to earn the hard-fought win. Senior right fielder Priscilla Perez’s infield single drove home freshman shortstop Keilani Jennings in the top of the 11th for the game-winning run.

“We had a positive mindset,” Correa said. “The whole game we played as if we were going to win even when we didn’t have the lead.”

Correa retired Bakersfield in order on the back end to secure the game for Santa Barbara. The victory avenged two home losses at the hands of Bakersfield on April 13.

“I didn’t really feel that tired,” Correa said. “I didn’t have a high pitch count, because I was able to stay ahead of hitters.”

In the second game of the tournament, the Gauchos failed to score a run in a 5-0 loss to BYU. Senior MeLinda Matsumoto took the loss, allowing two earned runs in seven innings of work. Santa Barbara’s struggles at the plate reemerged against the Cougars as the team mustered only three hits.

Against Santa Clara, Jennings hit a two-RBI double, driving home junior designated hitter Katie McWhirter and junior third basemen Jessica Beristianos to even the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Unfortunately, the Gauchos failed to score another run while the Broncos tacked on two in both the fifth and sixth to earn the 6-2 victory.

Sophomore Krista Cobb started the game for the Gauchos, allowing five earned runs in 5.2 innings. Matsumoto came on in relief and retired four straight batters to keep UCSB within striking distance.

The offensive woes continued for the Gauchos against tournament host Stanford in the weekend’s final game. The Cardinal pitching duo of Teagan Gerhart and Caitlin Breen kept the Gauchos off balance, holding Santa Barbara scoreless on only four hits.

Correa took the loss for the Gauchos in a 7-0 loss that marked the eighth time Santa Barbara has been shutout this season.

The Gauchos conclude nonconference play with a doubleheader against Fresno State today at Campus Diamond beginning at noon.
