Even with a majority of students on vacation, the Isla Vista Foot Patrol kept busy through the whole of UCSB’s spring break.
Officers responded to several calls over the past week, including reports of burglaries, robberies and possession of controlled substances.
On Fri., March 19, two thefts occurred when burglars entered homes that were left unlocked. The first larceny happened on the 6500 block of Picasso Road, where suspects stole a computer. The second took place on the 6500 block of Del Playa Drive, where a single suspect stole a computer and a cell phone.
As of press time, the suspects had not been apprehended.
The Isla Vista Foot Patrol also arrested two people on Sat., March 20 for possession of controlled substances. According to Deputy Freddy Padilla, officers contacted the suspects directly in front of the police station.
“Foot patrol officers conducted a traffic stop in the 6500 block of Trigo Road, right in front of IVFP, and the officer, while contacting the driver, noticed marijuana paraphernalia,” Padilla said. “A search of the vehicle revealed ecstasy, cocaine and marijuana for sale, along with $2,000 in cash.”
Deputies made an arrest in the early morning hours of Sun., March 21 after spotting a man hiding in the bushes outside a residence. The prowler was found near a sliding glass door, leading officers to suspect the man may have intended to break into the residence.
The IVFP also responded to violent crime during the break, when a thief robbed a woman and took her purse at 4 a.m. on Sat., March 27. The victim was attacked in front of her apartment on the 700 block of Embarcadero Del Norte, where the robber pushed her before taking her things.
Deputy Padilla said officers located the attacker shortly thereafter, arresting him after a foot pursuit.
“The suspect description was provided to an officer, and he chased the subject and caught him after the subject fell,” Padilla said. “The subject was then transported to the hospital for injuries sustained from the fall and was [later] arrested.”
