Artsweek’s Favorite Films of ’09
1. “Inglourious Basterds”
We’re all well aware of Quentin Tarantino’s notoriety for dirty, unpolished cult classic cinema. What “Basterds” accomplishes is a popular culture version of his taste, where the cinematography is cleaner but the dialogue remains loyal to fans of QT. While gruesome and ridiculous, the movie is suspenseful and entertaining, which is not something typical for a snuff film. Take it to the bank, Tarantino, because you’ve now officially made another hit.

On a night where the Gauchos could not hold onto the ball, they also allowed an undefeated record to slip out of their reach. After committing a season-high 23 turnovers with 15 giveaways in the first half alone, the UC Santa Barbara men’s basketball team fell 79-68 to the visiting Santa Clara Broncos Saturday night at the Thunderdome, halting a four-game win streak that began on opening night.

Nic Cage Is the Good, the Bad and the Utterly Insane “Lieutenant” ****
A man drives down a dark, empty Louisiana street in an unmarked sedan. He spots a couple coming out of a nightclub heading toward the car. He flips on his red and blue lights and pulls up to the couple. The man flashes his badge and displays his Dirty Harry Magnum tucked in his pants as he asks the couple if they have cocaine on them. After some deliberation, he finally gets want he wants as the woman pull out her crack pipe and lights it for him. They begin to kiss, and before you know it, the situation escalates to sex on the hood of his sedan as the man forces the boyfriend to watch at gunpoint. This man is one of New Orleans’ finest. He also is the newly promoted it to Lt. Terence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage), and he is the epitome of police corruption, as well as every taxpayer’s worst nightmare in “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans.”

Timbaland’s “Shock Value” Fizzles Out **
Following up the first successful installment of the Shock Value series, hit-making producer Timbaland presents his new collection, Shock Value II. The 16-track LP includes new collaborations with the biggest names in pop, rock and hip hop music, featuring Miley Cyrus and Drake along with previous collaborators OneRepublic, Justin Timberlake and Keri Hilson. While the previous effort of Shock Value brought the artists out of their comfort zones with sleek and addictive results, many of Timbaland’s collaborators on Shock Value II sound out of place with most of the songs on the new set sounding like misses rather than hits.
