Three separate calls for service kept local law enforcement busy the day after Thanksgiving, as officers arrested one man for attempted burglary in Isla Vista and responded to two separate vehicle incidents in the Goleta area.

At 8:25 p.m. on Nov. 24, two plainclothes I.V. Foot Patrol deputies arrested John Darren Dutton after they watched him break into and burglarize an apartment located on the 6500 block of Sabado Tarde Road. When officers confronted the subject, Dutton brandished a large knife and pointed it at the deputies, leading them to draw their handguns and Tasers. The suspect then dropped the knife, and the officers arrested him without using their weapons.

Dutton was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on $50,000 bail, charged with residential burglary and possession of an unlawful weapon. The 30-year-old Santa Barbara transient was also charged with violation of parole, as the incident constituted an infringement of his previously established terms of parole.

“IVFP personnel are conducting further investigation into this matter to determine if Dutton was involved in additional burglaries in the Isla Vista area,” Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Dept. Spokesman Michael Durant said.

Also on Friday, California Highway Patrol officers and the Santa Barbara County Fire Dept. responded to reports of a car accident on San Marcos Road in Goleta. A Toyota Tacoma pickup truck had run off the street, traveling approximately 100 feet before coming to a rest on its side in some nearby brush.

Rescue workers used the “Jaws of Life” to extract John Anderson, the car’s 25-year-old driver and sole occupant, from the vehicle. Anderson was then transported by ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

After Anderson was discharged from the hospital, CHP officers arrested him on a misdemeanor DUI charge, and booked him at the Santa Barbara County Jail.

In an another incident, which coincidentally also involved a Toyota Tacoma, local CHP officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a 25-year-old man who reported that a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 101 had just shot several bullets in the direction of his car.

The man told officers that at 10:25 a.m., a male driving a white Tacoma had pointed a gun at him through the vehicle’s window, before eventually exiting the highway at Patterson Avenue. While there were no other witnesses for the incident, the CHP and all local law enforcement agencies have been instructed to maintain a lookout for the truck involved.
