The Associated Students Finance Board allocated $650 from its budget to help bring turkey, stuffing and poetry to campus at its meeting Monday afternoon.

The board allocated $150 to Delta Sigma Theta sorority to pay for advertising in the Daily Nexus for their Thanksgiving dinner event, and also allocated $500 to the black women’s group Akanke to help pay for their event featuring Def Jam Poet Shihan. The $500 allocated to Akanke, which was the full amount requested, is only to be used to cover a portion of Shihan’s $2,500 contract, Finance Board member Ashleigh Rucker said. Monday’s allocations leave the board with $3,349.61 in unallocated funds for the remainder of the quarter.

Delta Sigma Theta fundraising chair Tauny Palm said the sorority’s Thanksgiving dinner feeds students who are unable to go home for the holiday. She said last year’s dinner fed over 300 students, all of whom were required to bring canned foods to donate to local food banks.

Finance Board member Maressa Mendeola said she attended last year’s dinner and thought it was memorable.

“I don’t spend Thanksgiving with my parents,” Mendeola said. “I went last year and it was nice to go to dinner with friends.”

Palm requested $1,150 for the event. However, Internal Vice President Adam Graff said because the sorority received funds earlier in the quarter, he was unsure whether the sorority should be allocated any additional money.

“I went to the Thanksgiving dinner last year and I thought it was very enjoyable,” Graff said. “It’s a very good cause. However, we did just fund their Delta Week. Traditionally Finance Board has not funded a group multiple times during a quarter.”

Board member Samantha Nevels said the board should allocate a smaller amount to the sorority’s dinner.

“Since they have already come for money before I don’t think we should give them that much — just a little,” Nevels said. “We should give them something small, like $150 for a Nexus ad.”

The motion to allocate $150 to the sorority for Nexus advertising passed with nine members in favor, three members in opposition and five abstentions.

The Delta Sigma Theta Thanksgiving dinner will be held in the Graduate Students Association lounge on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. Palm said all students who attend are required to donate three cans of food. Akanke’s Shihan performance will be in I.V. Theater Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are $3 and tickets at the door are $5, said Akanke representative Chelsea Moore.
